Nature's Contributions to People
“Eventually we’ll realize that if we destroy the ecosystem, we destroy ourselves” – Jonas Salk
We, as living beings, are dependent on the ecosystems of this planet. They provide a range of goods and services without which we could not exist and which allow us to thrive. These have been widely known as Ecosystem Services, though more recently this has evolved into the IPBES[1] (https://ipbes.net) definition which characterises these services as ‘nature’s contributions to people’ (NCP). A simple tree is an excellent example of nature’s contributions and forms one component of the GeoNest logo. It provides us with oxygen, climate moderation through carbon sequestration, shade, fruit, fibre and structural materials.
The contributions we enjoy are largely based on functioning natural ecosystems (termed Ecological Infrastructure….https://www.sanbi.org/biodiversity/science-into-policy-action/mainstreaming-biodiversity/ecological-infrastructure/) and the processes they facilitate.
GeoNest, through project interventions, focuses on understanding this relationship and improving the management of the interface between man (demand for NCP) and nature (supply of NCP) where the sustainable management of ecosystems secures long term benefits to people. The loss or degradation of these ecosystems exposes people to greater risk through reduced resilience and increased vulnerability.
GeoNest offers the following services:
- The development of environmental planning tools such as SEAs, EMFs and SDFs and the development of associated online information systems.
- Large scale social and environmental risk and vulnerability mapping and assessment – particularly for climate change.
- Mapping ecological infrastructure and the demand for and supply of the contributions it provides.

Key projects include
- Development of consolidated maps of ecological infrastructure assets for water security in two demonstration catchments
- Climate change vulnerability mapping for the Wool and Mohair Promotion Project, Lesotho
- Climate, Food Security and Nutrition Analysis in the Community Councils of Mafeteng, Mohale’s Hoek and Quthing Districts, Lesotho.
